"Al" Almon Steele

May 24, 1930 — November 21, 2013

Almon “Al” Steele was born on May 24, 1930 in Grant City, MO, the son of Bright and Eva Belle Scammahorn Steele. He died Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO at the age of 83.
After graduation from Bedford High School in Bedford, IA he began work for Western Light and Telephone Company. While working in Charter Oak, IA he met the love of his life, Helen Remmes.
Al was drafted and served in the Marines as a Communications Specialist. Upon returning from his military duties he went back to work for Western Light and Telephone Co.
On January 18, 1954 Al married Helen. They were blessed with four children and throughout his career in the Communications Industry the family lived in Denison and Oakland, IA.
Al was well respected in the communities he lived serving as a Volunteer Firefighter, member of the Lions Club, Cub Scout leader and was active in the Catholic Church. He was a loving father who was very supportive of his children and their school and extracurricular activities. He and Helen also enjoyed socializing and playing golf.
In 1989 Al retired after 41 years, giving Al and Helen the opportunity to live closer to their children and grandchildren and spend time traveling. In 2002 Al and Helen moved to Olathe, KS.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen, and four children; Cindi Nielson, Stan (Joan), Carolyn (Mike) Bonavida ,Greg (Cindy), twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild; sister Leta Belle (Bob) Peve and two brothers Dorrel and David. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
The family requests memorials be given to Hospice House of Kansas City in Kansas City, MO or Craig Hospital for Spinal Injuries in Englewood, Colorado.
