Alberta May Castillo was born on October 25, 1951, the daughter of Albert and Hazel May (Robeson) Sargent in Cherokee, Iowa. She was raised in Storm Lake and graduated from high school with the class of 1970. On May 23, 1971, she married Juan Castillo at the Community of Christ Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with four children and built their home in Deloit. Following the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Teresa, they lovingly adopted and raised their granddaughter, Britany.
Alberta found great joy in caring for her children during their early years. She later pursued higher education, demonstrating dedication as she earned her master’s degree from Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. She devoted her career to counseling, offering guidance to solo parents while working at Job Corps in Denison for many years.
As an adult, Alberta chose to be baptized and remained a devoted member of the Denison Community of Christ Church. She also gave back to her community as a volunteer first responder in Deloit. She found peace and happiness outdoors, whether gardening, tending to her yard, or watching Koi fish at her pond. She had a special love for birdwatching, particularly hummingbirds, and collected gnomes. Alberta also enjoyed sewing and found relaxation in the simple pleasure of coloring. Most of all, she treasured the time spent with her family, cherishing every moment together.
Alberta passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 73 years, four months and 25 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Teresa Castillo; and siblings: Jessie Taylor, Ollie Sargent and Donald Sargent.
