Alvina Schiernbeck passed away peacefully Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Eventide Lutheran Home Memory Lane, Denison, Iowa, after a brief stay there due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease, at the age of eighty-nine. Alvina Maria (Poggensee Lilleholm) Schiernbeck was born February 25, 1929, in Breda, Iowa, to Herman and Elsie Poggensee, second eldest of twelve children.
She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, on August 26, 1929. Most of her life was spent in the Denison, Iowa, area, graduating from Denison High School in 1947. Alvina was united in marriage January 25, 1948, to Earl Lilleholm at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, at which time she converted to the Methodist faith. They farmed north of Denison and were the parents of three children: Earlene, Zelda and Randall. Alvina married Clarence Schiernbeck May 18, 1991, in Vancouver, Washington and they farmed near Schleswig, Iowa, and were trailer haulers all across the United States.
Alvina was well known for her nurturing nature. She provided care for both her mother-in-law and mother in their final years, as well as for her husband, Earl, during a long battle with heart disease, and for her grandchildren, Tracy, Jesse and Colton. She was employed at Eventide Lutheran Home for several years as a nurse’s aide. She was a long-time farming wife whose family meant everything to her. She enjoyed her plants, gardens, birds and reading.
Alvina was preceded in death by both her husbands, Earl on November 1, 1977, and Clarence on August 1, 1996; her parents; her son, Randy; two sisters, Louise and Minnie; one brother, Walter, one grandson, Chris; and one sister-in-law, Stephanie. Survivors include: two daughters, Earlene, and Zelda and her husband, Jack; her daughter-in-law, Mary; grandchildren: Shad, Joshua (Juli), Jennifer (Russ), Tracy (Andrew), Jesse, and Colton; great-grandchildren: Jenna, Jaeli, Jake, Christopher, Alice, Christopher, Cody, Emily, Morgan, Allison and Joseph; brothers: John (Alma), Ernest, Edward, Robert (Margie), Louis, Arnold, Donald (Pam), and Herman (Jackie); numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
