Ann Broers

March 26, 1929 — December 30, 2013

Ann Broers, beloved wife of Dr. M.U. Broers of Schleswig, died late Monday night, December 30, 2013, in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Born in Elk Creek, Nebraska on March 26, 1929, she was the third child (and third daughter) of Claus Erwin and Bertha Louise (Damm) Buethe. She was baptized in Christ April 22, 1929 and later confirmed on March 29, 1942. She graduated from Tecumseh High School in Tecumseh, Nebraska, in 1946, and received the Senior Award for Music.
Ann married Merlin Ulysses Broers in Tecumseh, Nebraska on June 12, 1947. She worked as a secretary in Omaha, earning her PhT (putting hubby through) until she became a doctor’s wife. They lived for a short time in Sioux City, Iowa, before making their permanent home at 520 Fir Street in Schleswig, Iowa. Ann bore four children between 1950 and 1955, and was a dedicated and loving mother. She loved to read to and sing with her children. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and worked for many church functions with ‘Ladies Aid‘. Ann knew her Lord Jesus throughout her life.
She loved to play bridge, and to golf, and was very good at both. She and Merlin played Gin most every night. She was a member of the Schleswig Golf Club, and won a lot of trophies, both individually and with her husband, as a couple. She even scored that elusive ‘hole-in-one’ about ten years ago.
In the years leading to retirement, she worked at her husband physician’s office, returning to the skills of her youth. Ann enjoyed retirement, with her beloved husband, for some twenty years, as they traveled widely, visiting far-away destinations including Australia & New Zealand, Europe, and Hawaii (a couple of times).
She was always happiest when at least one of her children was home, and she never missed sending a birthday or anniversary card to those she loved, and they are many.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, by a brother Willis Dean, who died in infancy, by two sisters Darlene (Mrs. Don), and Ruby (Mrs. Gene), and by one nephew, Roger.
She is survived by her husband (of sixty-six years) Dr. Merlin Ulysses, a sister, Luella a brother, Don (Ruth), and by Lu, the second wife of her sister's widower and a mother to nine of Ann’s eighteen surviving nieces and nephews – Dianne, Kristy, Nancy, Steve, Kevin, Susan, Kimber, John, Rory, Brad, Royce, Michael, Jim, David, Bill, Mark, Amy, and Ronda all knew their Aunt Ann well, and mourn her loss.
Ann is survived by her four children: Craig (Renee), Deborah (Gary), Scott (Kathy) , and Barbara (Craig).
Ann is survived by her eleven grandchildren: Jeffrey (Marcy), Jeremy (Candace), and Gina; Pastor Steven (Kristy); Trent; Jessica (Tyler); Brooke (Dr. Dustin), Ryan (Kaitlyn) attending OCU Law School, Oklahoma City, OK, Angela, Brittany Vegas, NV), and Summer Reynolds, and by her sixteen great-grandchildren: Rylan, Claire, Jace, and Conner, Carter, Sophia, Malachi, and Micah, Oliver and Jasper, Dawson, Maddux, and Grace, and Lilyana, Brayden, and Camden,
