Arlo Albert Riessen was born on June 29, 1928 in Schleswig, Iowa, the son of George and Ella (Ericksen) Riessen. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. His dedication to his faith was a cornerstone of his character. Arlo pursued an interest for technology by attending a trade school in Sioux City to study TV repair.
Arlo's journey was marked by a profound sense of duty as he selflessly served his country in the United States Air Force. Enlisting November 29, 1950, he exemplified courage and commitment throughout his service until his honorable discharge on October 21, 1952.
On April 21, 1957, Arlo was united in marriage to Marlys Mummert at United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Lisa and Michael. They made their home in Denison. Arlo enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children when they were younger. He was a man of many talents and passions, a profound love for Farm and Ranch life. His dedication to caring for livestock was unmatched, and his expertise in this field was admired by many.
In earlier years, Arlo and Marlys enjoyed traveling, camping and hunting; including a six-week trip to Alaska and a trip to Ireland. They loved to go dancing, playing cards, and music. Also, they would snowbird every winter to Vegas and then Arizona where they lived full time for many years.
Arlo was known for being a "jack of all trades." His versatile skills and diverse interests showcased his curiosity and passion for learning. His thirst for knowledge was insatiable always seeking to expand his horizons and delve into new topics. Many will remember him spending hours sipping coffee at Cronk's, engaging in enriching conversations and forming lasting friendships along the way. In addition to his hobbies, Arlo was known for his unwavering kindness and generosity towards others.
Arlo passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023 at Gracewell-Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison attaining the age of 95 years, 4 months, and 18 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ella Riessen; wife, Marlys Riessen; brothers: Raymond Riessen, Orville Riessen, Milo Riessen, and Leonard Riessen; and sisters: Florence Griffin and Arlene Jahn.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa and her husband Gary Greder of Denison; son: Michael Riessen of Aspen, Colorado; granddaughter, Samantha Greder and her fiancé Andrew Arami of Savannah, Georgia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Private Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024 in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig.
