Arnold "Arnie" Poggensee

June 28, 1944 — May 19, 2019

Arnold Poggensee was born June 28, 1944, (4 minutes before his twin brother, Donald) in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Herman and Elsie Poggensee. He passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019, at his home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of seventy-four.
Arnie was baptized in Christ September 24, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed his faith at Zion on March 22, 1959. He received his education in the Denison Community Schools and graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1962. Arnie enlisted in the United States Army June 2, 1965, and served his country until his honorable discharge as a Sergeant June 1, 1971. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Infantry Badge and Expert (Rifle).
Arnie married Phyllis Gallagher on September 3, 1977, and the couple was blessed with three sons, Jason, Justin and Joseph. Arnie farmed for a time raising hogs, was employed at Farmland Foods, started Poggensee Electronics in Denison and serviced electronics and appliances as a local Whirlpool dealer. He began Poggensee Electronics in the late 1960's, which later turned into Crawford Ice.
A member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Arnie's faith guided the principles in his life. He taught Sunday School for many years and loved ushering at church. Hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes. Arnie enjoyed fishing trips to Canada but loved pheasant and deer hunting on the family land, and in areas around Crawford County. He also loved pheasant hunting and fishing trips with friends to South Dakota. He enjoyed mushroom hunting as well. Arnie was involved with many outdoor activities including the release and establishment of wild turkeys in Crawford County in the early 90's. Arnie spent many years volunteering at local schools to give away trees and lectured to the students about the importance of land conservation and stewardship. Gardening, especially vegetables, tomatoes and apple trees provided many hours of pleasurable activity for him. He loved his tomato juice and horseradish. A fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival, he also enjoyed watching westerns on VHS and had a collection of many VHS tapes.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Louise in infancy, Minnie and Alvina; two brothers, Walter and John; brothers-in-law, Earl and Clarence; and sister-in-law, Stephanie. Survivors include: three sons, Jason of Lebanon Oregon, Justin and Sara, and Joe and his wife, Sarah; five grandchildren, Lincoln, Lillian, Sophie, Coy and Willow; six brothers, Ernest, Edward, Robert and his wife, Marge, Louis, Donald and his wife, Pam, and Herman and his wife, Jackie; brother-in-law, LaVerne; two sisters-in-law, Alma and Florence; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
