Bernadine I. Coenen

Bernadine Isabelle Coenen was born December 10, 1933, at Harlan, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Agatha Gertrude Pauley. She passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of eighty-three.
Bernadine received her education in the schools near her home and graduated from St. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Defiance, Iowa with the class of 1952. She was united in marriage to Ivo Coenen August 27, 1956, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, and she began her career as a homemaker and farmer’s wife.
She enjoyed life on the farm vegetable gardening, canning, butchering chickens, selling eggs and cream, and milking cows. She will be remembered for her homemade bread and rolls. She also enjoyed socializing, talking on the phone and taking trips to the casino. She never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone. Her favorite television shows were Wheel of Fortune, Dancing With the Stars, The Voice, and The Bold and the Beautiful. Reading the newspaper and following Iowa and Iowa State football were also favorite pastimes for her. She was a member of a card club and played Rummy, Pitch and Euchre.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivo; one son, Darrell; one daughter, Diane; and one step-grandson, Nick; one brother, Jim; one sister, Blanche. Survivors include: two sons, Randal and his wife, Lila, and Robert and his wife, Melanie; one daughter, Nancy and her husband, Jeff; six grandchildren, Russell and his wife, Penni, Ryan, Rachel, Brian and his wife, Kelsey, Trevor, and Kristy and her husband, Josh; two step grandchildren: Eric and Ann; six great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one brother, Ervin and his wife, Thelma; one brother-in-law, Dwight; other relatives and friends.
