Bernadine Marie Kragel was born December 27, 1938, the daughter of Hugo and Gertrude Ernst. She passed away Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Eventide Lutheran Home at the age of 75.
Bernadine was born on the family farm near Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ May 7, 1939 at Friedens Evangelical & Reformed Church and later confirmed there on March 29, 1953. Bernadine received her education at a rural school, Morgan #5 near Schleswig, and graduated with the Schleswig High class of 1957. On January 19, 1958, she was united in marriage to Paul Kragel, Jr. They settled on a farm near Charter Oak and were blessed with the birth of three sons. In 1974, they moved to the Ernst family farm northwest of Schleswig, and then in 1990 the couple moved into Schleswig. In 1969, they started the Kragel family grain bin business. Then in 1980, she partnered with Donna Meeves in ownership and operation of Schleswig Foods for 17 years.
Bernadine was a member of the United Church of Christ. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed gardening and baking for her family, rye bread and potato salad were specialities of hers. She loved to read, golf and care for her animals.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul of 44 years; one sister, Jolene; and two brother-in-laws, Gerald and John. Survivors include: three sons, Randall and his special friend, Wendi; Ryan and his wife, Rhonda; Neil and his wife, Kim; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; two sisters, Norma Jean, and Marlene; two brothers, Charles and his wife, Traudl; and Hugo Jr. and his wife, Cynthia; other relatives and friends
