Bernice Clausen

Bernice Anna Clausen was born July 8, 1916, in Grant Township, Ida County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Minnie Miller Janssen. She died Thursday, March 8, 2012, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 95.
Bernice was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township by Rev. Schwenk and confirmed in 1930 by Rev. Kielhorn at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa. She attended Grant Township Public School through the eighth grade and completed one year of high school in Schleswig.
On January 25, 1939, Bernice was united in marriage to Andrew Clausen, Jr. at the parsonage of Friedens Church by Rev. A.F. Rinne. The couple made their home on several Schleswig area farms until 1946 when they purchased their own farm where they reared their three children.
Besides her lifes work as a farm wife, Bernice was also a member of United Church of Christ Womens Guild and involved in other church activities throughout most of her adult life.
An expert seamstress, she sewed and mended for her family all her life. Her chocolate chip cookies were always available and were usually sent along on trips away from home. Playing Bridge, growing flowers, and making quilts, were her favorite hobbies after she and Andrew moved to Schleswig in 1972. Bernice made 143 quilts over the 35 years she lived in Schleswig, most finding their way to the beds of her family.
In September 2008, deteriorating health prompted Bernices move to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Andrew; two sisters, Sylvia and her husband, Herbert; and Ethel and her husband Frank; two brothers, Hilbert and Allen; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jurgen; Frieda and her husband, Edgar; Paul and his wife, Irene; Leonard; and Lenhardt; and one grandson-in-law, Matthew. Survivors include two sons, Larry and his wife, JoAnn; and Leon and his wife, Phyllis; one daughter, Kathleen and her husband, Wendell; 10 grandchildren: Greg and his wife Kathy; Grant and his wife, Janette; Gerrad and his wife, Carrie; Scott and his wife, Kristy; Steven and his wife, Lisa, Lance and his wife Elsa; Lynn and her husband, Mike; Wendy and her husband Sascha; Paula and her husband, Jay; Andrew and his wife, Melissa; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Ruth and Anna; and Mildred; many nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
