Bernice M. Kuhlmann

April 11, 1927 — April 15, 2017

Bernice Marie Brodersen Kuhlmann was born on April 11, 1927, the daughter of Hans A. and Alma Brodersen. She passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Denison Care Center at the age of ninety years and four days.
Bernice was baptized in Christ and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She received her education at Hanover #7 and graduated from Denison High School in 1945. Following graduation, she taught at Paradise and Morgan Township schools.
Bernice married Vernon Kuhlmann on October 12, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They were blessed with the birth of three children: Patricia, Janet and Barry. Bernice and Vernon made their home and raised their family on the family farm three miles east of Charter Oak farming for 35 years. In 1981, they retired and moved into their new home in Charter Oak. Bernice moved to Silveridge in Denison in November, 2013 and made her final move to Denison Care Center in June, 2016.
Bernice was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School for many years, sang in the ladies choir and was an active member of the LWML, serving in every office through the years. She was a member of the Charter Oak Clubettes and also Willow Modern Homemakers.
Bernice’s family was her greatest joy and she was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was happiest surrounded by her family especially at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter when she would provide wonderful meals with all the trimmings. Bernice and Vernon always enjoyed attending their children’s and grandchildren’s school and sports activities and also enjoyed bowling together and playing cards and socializing with friends and neighbors. Bernice loved her flowers and always looked forward to spring planting and tending her flower beds in the summer.
Bernice was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed making and finishing quilt tops. After making quilts for her three children, her goal was to give each grandchild a “grandma quilt” as a wedding gift.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 2013; her parents; her two brothers, Eldon and his wife, Muriel, and Vernon and his wife, LuVerne; brothers-in-law, Edgar and Kenneth and his wife, Dee; and sister-in-law, Darlene and her husband, Edward. Survivors include: children, Pat and her husband, Jerry; Jan; and Barry and his wife, Terri; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Jason and his wife, Jenne and their daughters, Anyslee and Kaille; Amy and her children, Madison, Macy and Lane; Michael; Erin and her husband, Craig and their children, Cohen and Cora; Amanda and her husband, Michael and their daughter, Julia; Eric; and Jordyn; one sister-in-law, Ruth; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
