Betty Fouts

March 28, 1928 — February 1, 2012

Betty Ann Amanda Fouts, daughter of Adolph Otto and Ella Henritta Jepsen Kuehnhold was born March 28, 1928, at her aunt s home in Schleswig, Iowa. The only daughter of five children, Betty spent her youth growing up on the family farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. Betty was baptized in Christ as an infant on June 10, 1928, at Friedens Evangelical Church in Schleswig and was later confirmed in 1942. She attended rural Hanover #4 School and later attended Charter Oak Public School.
Betty was employed at the Neilsen Hotel in Denison, Iowa, as a banquet server and maid.
On March 30, 1952, Betty was united in marriage with Jerry A. Fouts. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Jean and Linda. Betty was baptized June 9, 1957, at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints and was confirmed on June 16, 1957. Betty and Jerry settled on the family farm southwest of Dow City and engaged in farming until 1996 and later retiring to Dow City.
Betty was a tireless worker, constantly in motion. She enjoyed hard work and being productive. She was an avid gardener and found great joy in working with her hands in the soil. Her efforts produced beautiful flowers and bountiful harvests of fruits and vegetables which she shared with family and friends. She enjoyed being a servant for her church and community, always volunteering when there was a need. She was an active member of the Dow City Legion Auxiliary. As a testament to her work ethic, Betty sought employment at age 80 and became employed at Debs Deli on a part time basis making pizzas. Her talents were endless for she was always busy doing something, even during the time of her failing health.
Betty died February 1, 2012, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital with her daughters by her side after a courageous year-long battle with ovarian cancer.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; parents; and three brothers: Wayne, Donald, and Melvin Kuehnhold.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jean and her husband, Jeff; and Linda and her companion, Rick; three grandchildren: Shad, Lauren and husband, Brett; and Danielle; one great-grandchild, Aven; one brother, Vernon and his wife, Donna Mae; three sisters-in-law: Ruth, Gloria, and JoAnn; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
