Betty J. Greder

January 5, 1943 — October 10, 2018

Betty Jean Greder was born January 5, 1943, on a farm near Vail, Iowa, the daughter of August and Emma Marie Hast (Nollen). She passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of seventy-five.
Betty was baptized in Christ April 4, 1943, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township and confirmed her faith at Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit on April 14, 1957. She received her education in the Denison Community Schools and graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1961. On July 28, 1962, Betty was united in marriage to Keith Greder at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, by Rev. C.W. Schmidt.
Beginning her employment years in the medical field, Betty first was a Candy Striper during high school before obtaining her first job at the hospital, then on to St. Anthony’s in Carroll for training. She was subsequently employed at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison as a nurse aid in the surgery department for a time before joining Eventide Lutheran Home as a nurse aid. Betty then was employed as the activity director at Eventide before buying the Mode-O-Day store in Denison and working in the clothing sales business for ten years. She went on to be the assistant manager in clothing for Schweizers Clothing in Fremont, Nebraska. While in Fremont, Betty took training in artistic design and worked at Vern’s Flower Shop before returning to Denison and using her talents and skills at both Albertsen’s and Country Rose. After retirement, she was a greeter at the hospital until illness prevented her from continuing.
In her leisure time, Betty enjoyed quilting, flower gardening and camping at Lake View, Coon River, Exira and Crescent – in earlier years in a tent, then in a camper. She was an active member of the community as evidenced by her participation in the Christian Women’s Club, Fellowship Club and Women’s Guild at Our Savior, The Red Hat Society for a short time, and the volunteer groups at Eventide and Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Gayle Hast in infancy; August Hast, Jr. “Fritzy” and his wife, Darlene; Virgil "Bud” Hast and his wife, Ferne; and Vernon Hast; three sisters: Phyllis “Molly” Hummel and her husband, Norman; Doris Auen and her husband, Arnold; and Shirley Hollrah and her husband, Kenneth; and one grandson, Gable Greder. She is survived by her husband, Keith Greder of Denison, Iowa; two sons: Todd Greder and his wife, Joan of Sloan, Iowa, and Troy Greder and his wife, Kris of Wall Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Delores Hast of Denison, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
