Betty Paulsen

December 3, 1928 — August 24, 2012

Betty Lou Paulsen was born December 3, 1928, the daughter of Mathius and Alvina M. (Carstens) Grell. She passed away Friday, August 24, 2012, at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 83.
Betty was born in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ February 25, 1929, and confirmed in May 1942. She received her education in rural school near her home. Betty was united in marriage to Peter Paulsen at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa, on February 28, 1950. The couple made their home in the rural Schleswig area, and were blessed with the birth of four daughters. During the years that followed Betty and Pete farmed. At this time Betty also raised dogs. In 1970 they moved from the farm into Deloit and Betty went to work as an aide in the Deloit School.
Betty loved socializing and playing cards with her family and friends. She and Pete enjoyed doing woodworking projects together as well as going camping and fishing in Lake View. Betty was very involved in church all her life, overseeing Sunday School and VBS; she was a member of Ladies Aid, serving as their President. Betty was also a member of the quilting circle and sang in the church choir. She was a previous member of St. Matthews Lutheran in Mapleton, Faith Lutheran in Deloit, and, most recently, Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Pete, in 2009, one son-in-law, Troy Johnson, five sisters and two brothers: Emma Lehmann, Edna Cram, Dorothy Scheer Murren, Marie Kropf Knudsen, Jeannette Johnson, Arnold and Freddie Grell. Survivors include four daughters: Susan Young and her husband Tom of Sioux City, Iowa, Sandra Luvaas and her husband Chuck of Ames, Iowa, Patricia Leinen and her husband Dan of Denison, Iowa and Lois Johnson of La Vista, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Vonnie Grell and Lillian Wodtke both of Danbury, Iowa and Wardene Overhue of South Dakota, many beloved friends and family.
