Beverly Jean Custer was born May 26, 1928, at Princeton, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Lora Butterworth. She passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-eight.
Beverly received her education in schools near her home and graduated from Ainsworth Consolidated School in Ainsworth, Iowa, with the Class of 1945. She attended Graceland College at Lamoni, Iowa, for one year studying Public School Music. She continued her college education, received her associate of arts degree from Iowa Western Community College at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and received her bachelor of arts degree in psychology and sociology from Buena Vista College at the Council Bluffs center at the age of sixty.
On June 18, 1946, Beverly was united in marriage to Robert Custer. They were blessed with the birth of four children: Raberta, Gayle, Richard and Craig. Beverly and Bob began farming for themselves in 1948 eventually moving to Dow City to farm. The Custers operated a trucking business with stock and grain trucks for thirteen years. They retired to Dow City in 1991.
Beverly had been employed as a secretary for the Title I program for the school for a short time and had also been employed at West Central Iowa Sheltered Workshop in Denison, Iowa, for six years. She was an ordained minister in the R.L.D.S. church where she also served as organist, directed choirs, sung solos, taught voice and piano lessons and planned worship services for the church on the district level and for the local branch. She was active in the Legion Auxiliary, serving as president for 11 years and was a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Music, helping people and supervising things brought her great enjoyment. She had traveled to Washington, D.C., New York and along the Eastern Coast and enjoyed wintering in Georgia, but always wanted to go back to Iowa. Beverly enjoyed college football, especially Iowa football, watching movies, MacGyver and MidSummer Murders.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joyce. Survivors include her husband, Robert; two daughters, Raberta and husband, Stephen and Gayle and husband, David; two sons, Richard and wife, Kathy and Craig and wife, Linda; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
