Charles William Crampton was born October 12, 1927, at rural Vail, Iowa, the son of Clyde and Viola Crampton. He passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-nine.
Charles received his education in the Vail area schools and was a 1946 graduate of Vail High School. He served his country as a tank commander in Korea in the armored division of the 160th Infantry of the United States Army from October 6, 1950 until September 20, 1952. Medals he received included AOM (Japan), KSM with one bronze service star, CIB and United Nations Service Medal. Charles then began his career as a heavy equipment operator first for Comstock Gravel Pit and then for the Department of Natural Resources.
He enjoyed staying at home with the companionship of his dogs. His jellies and pickles were enjoyed by local residents, especially his corncob jelly and watermelon pickles. Making crafts with wood and knickknacks and then selling them and fishing in Minnesota with his brother Emerson were favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed watching television and video cassettes, particularly polka shows and Iowa Public Televison.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Emerson and a brother-in-law, Harold. Survivors include his sister, Lillian; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
