Coleen Kay Henkel was born May 1, 1972 in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of John and Joan (Klein) Cassens. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. She received her education from Schleswig Community School and graduated with the Class of 1990.
On June 7, 1991, Coleen was united in marriage to Mark Henkel at United Church of Christ in Schleswig. To this union, they were blessed with two children. They made their home in Kiron.
Over the years, she enjoyed working part time jobs including: Something Unique, Pizza Hut, Breadeaux Pizza, Schleswig Middle School, Target and Hy-Vee with her husband Mark. Coleen was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, serving on church council. She was also a founding member of M/C Lightning.
She was full of life and it reflected in all those around her. She loved talking on the phone, visiting with friends and family, playing Fantasy Football and watching the Minnesota Vikings. Above all, she cherished her family. Recently she became a grandma and was very proud of her grandson, Atlas. Coleen was a warrior who was a two-time cancer survivor. Her absence will be missed by many who knew and loved her. She was truly a friend to all.
Coleen passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, at the age of 50 years. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, John and Helen Cassens; maternal grandparents, Mary and Henry Klein; uncles: Jim Klein and Jack Klein; and nephew, Christopher Cassens.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Henkel of Kiron; daughter, Miranda Henkel (Andrew Zaug) of Galva, IA and their son, Atlas Zaug; son, Ethan Henkel of Newton, IA; parents, John and Joan Cassens of Schleswig; siblings: Craig Cassens and his wife Laura of Faulkton, South Dakota, Chris Cassens and his wife Becky of Oskaloosa, and Carrie Cassens of Schleswig; In-laws: Roger and Joyce Henkel of Deloit, Dale and Maureen Neumann of Denison, Mike Henkel and his wife Christy of Lake City, Tiffany Henkel of Dunlap, Sheri Neddermeyer of Denison, and Sheila Chase of St. Petersburg, FL; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous friends.
A Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig. Funeral Service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron. Memorials may be directed to the family.
