Corinne “Corky” Mae Smyth was born July 29, 1927, at Arion, Iowa, the daughter of Orris and Esther Ahart. She passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-nine.
Corky received her education in the schools near her home and continued her education at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs where she graduated with the Class of 1945. She was united in marriage to Bernard Smyth October 20, 1967, at Hot Springs, South Dakota, and they settled in Maxwell, Nebraska, where she was employed as a bookkeeper for small businesses. They subsequently moved to the Dow City area in 1986, and then into Dow City in 1990.
She was a reporter for the North Platte Telegraph, chairman for the Red Cross in Nebraska and in Denison after they moved here, Girl Scout troop leader for many years in Maxwell and in 1972, she was elected to raise money to buy a new ambulance. She was a member of the Great Plains Creative Art Association for more than twenty-five years and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Being socially outgoing and active, she enjoyed socializing with friends and playing cards, traveling throughout the United States by car and in recent years by plane, fishing and camping in Columbus, Nebraska and attending the State Fair in their motor home.
Corky was preceded in death by her parents; one son, David; two brothers, Jim and Bob. Survivors include: her husband, Bernard; step-children: Ron; Anita and her husband, Paul; Cathy and her husband, Hank; Tegan; Theresa and Lisa; 14 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great grandchildren; 2 step great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends
