Darryl Luane Stenoien was born January 23, 1962, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, to his proud parents, Doug and LaVola (Kolb) Stenoien. On January 15, 2011, at the age of 48, Darryl was at his home on the Ranch in Odebolt, Iowa, when he was called home to be with Jesus.
Darryl was raised in Arlington Heights along with his brother and three sisters, Gary, Sheryl, Tammy and Gwendolyn. Darryl and his family were members of the Northwest Covenant Church in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, where he was also baptized. Darryl graduated from Buffalo Grove High School in 1980 and went on to attend electronics school. He married his childhood sweetheart in 1984 and they resided in Florida. He later moved to the Ranch in Odebolt, Iowa, where he has lived since.
From an early age, Darryl loved to fix things. He loved to take things apart to see how they worked, and then put them back together again. He designed and built gas powered model planes and cars. Darryl had an amazing mechanical ability which was a necessity in the Stenoien family!
Some of Darryls most cherished memories were from his time in Florida. He loved the beach, especially the sunsets! He enjoyed waterskiing, snow skiing, fishing, cooking, and flying with his father. He would spend every free moment pursuing these passions. When it came to music for Darryl, it was only Elvis. He especially liked Elvis gospel songs.
Darryl never had children, but he had many nieces and nephews whom he treated as his own. They loved going to see Uncle Darryl and always had a story to tell about something Uncle Darryl had taught them. His life priorities were God, family, and country. He loved his heavenly Father and talked much of Christ, the Bible, and eternal life. Darryl was very proud of his Norwegian-German heritage. He was also a passionate, conservative Republican and spent many hours keeping up on current political events. Not many days went by that Darryl didnt listen to Rush Limbaugh or Fox News. He had been especially upset over the last couple of years as he watched his America fall further and further away from God. Darryl loved his family and was a devoted son, brother, and uncle.
Darryl was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, Emil and Edith (Dodo) Carlson; maternal grandparents, Delphin and Leila Kolb; paternal grandparents, Ole and Bura Stenoien; Uncle Ben Stenoien; Aunt Carol (Kolb) Schmidt; and infant nephew, Daniel Stenoien. Darryl is survived by his parents, Doug and Lavola (Kolb) Stenoien; one brother, Gary Stenoien; three sisters, Sheryl (Stenoien) Bowen, Tammy (Stenoien) Swanson, and Gwen (Stenoien) Brown. He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews, five great-nieces and nephews, and many aunts and uncles sharing in the loss.
