Denise Marie Miller was born November 9, 1950, the daughter of Maurice and Alvena Kubec Miller. She passed away at the Manning Health Care Center in Manning, Iowa, on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the age of sixty.
Denise was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended Benton Community Schools graduating with the class of 1968. She attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa, and then received her B.A. from Northwest Missouri State University in 1973. She also earned her coaching certification from Morningside College in 2006. Denise worked as a secretary for West Iowa Mental Health in Mapleton, Iowa, after graduating from NWMSU and in 1975, she moved to the Denison Iowa Mental Health office. She was employed at Ries Amusement in 1976, and then began working for UPS in 1977. After retiring from UPS in 2006, she worked at the Graphic Edge in Carroll, Iowa.
Denise was united in marriage to James Miller on May 15, 1970 in Estherville, Iowa, and to this union two children were born. The couple lived in Mapleton for a few years and in 1975 they moved to a farm near Vail, Iowa.
Denise was a sports enthusiast, participating in softball and track in high school and college. She liked to watch football and baseball. She took part in Iowa Games, Senior Olympics, and arm wrestling matches. Attending the Drake Relays with friends in Des Moines was a highlight of hers every spring. She helped James for many years with the Vail Soccer program and coached softball in Ar-We-Va until she became ill. Fishing in local ponds, helping in the garden, watching Survivor on television, or just being outside in the sun were relaxing and fun activities she enjoyed. She was an avid supporter of Relay For Life and was the top collector of contributions in Crawford County. She was also a supporter of Special Olympics and a donor to Senior Olympics. She was a member of the Northwest Missouri State Alumni Association, the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Legion Auxiliary in Blairstown, Iowa.
Denise was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, James; two children, Dustin and Destiny; one brother, Duane and his wife, Julie; two sisters: Doreen and her husband, Kevin; and Donna and her husband, Randy; other relatives and friends.
