Denison

Dennis John Fineran was born on October 5, 1950 in Denison, Iowa, the son of John “Jake” and Lorraine (Schneller) Fineran. He attended Deloit Community School and then later graduated from Denison High School. He went on to further his education at Northwest Missouri State where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety and Education.

On June 19, 2004, Dennis married the love of his life, Shirley Behnk. Dennis was a man of many talents and passions. In his leisure time, Dennis enjoyed watching westerns and in earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, farming and fishing. He also enjoyed embarking on family trips to Okoboji with his family.

Coaching little league football to building houses, his dedication and hard work were evident in all that he did. With a knack for working with his hands, Dennis built 32 houses around Denison. Throughout his life, he ventured into various business endeavors, including owning and operating his own construction business and alongside his mother, Lorraine, Dennis also served as the co-owner of Community Cafe in Denison.

Dennis also successfully owned a bar called Finny’s Monkey for a few years. His love for socializing and bringing people together was evident in this endeavor as he created a space where good times and lasting memories were made. He was also the Driver’s Ed Instructor for many years. Farming held a special place in Dennis's heart; it was not merely a profession but a calling that brought him immense fulfillment.

Dennis dedicated his life to serving his community; first as a dedicated policeman in Denison and then he transitioned to a career as a public servant before eventually retiring. Dennis then took on the role of Mayor of Denison, where he selflessly served for roughly 6 years, making significant contributions to the betterment of the city he held dear.

Dennis will be remembered for his unwavering love for his '75 Chevy Scottsdale, his hard work, and dedication. He leaves behind a vast community of friends and loved ones who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. He passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Silveridge Assisted Living in Denison attaining the age of 73 years, 9 months, and 5 days.
