Dennis Clyde Potts was born August 29, 1949, the son of Clyde and Doris Mallison Potts. He died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, at the age of sixty-one.
Dennis was born in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ April 3, 1955, and confirmed May 22, 1977, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He received his education in the Storm Lake Community Schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1968. After graduation he continued his education at a mechanics school in Des Moines. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded several medals including National Defense Service, Vietnam Service with Bronze Service Star, Bronze Star Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign, Sharpshooter Army Commendation with Oak Leaf Cluster, and Expert. After his honorable discharge, he returned to school in Sheldon where he studied bricklaying.
While in Sheldon he worked at the Villager Restaurant where he met his wife, Debra. The couple were united in marriage in Hawarden, Iowa, on June 23, 1976, and were blessed with the birth of two sons. After living in Sheldon, Storm Lake, Newell, and LeMars, the couple settled in Denison where Dennis worked for Farmland Industries, remaining there for over 25 years.
In his leisure time Dennis occupied his time at woodworking, a craft he indulged in energetically. Also baking cookies and outdoor grilling were pastimes he enjoyed. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, caring for his family and others before himself, a quality he continued offering even when he didnt feel well. His family was more important to him than anything. He liked playing cards, camping, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed all kinds of sports and was a keen fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He especially found joy in attending his childrens sporting events. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and of the Denison American Legion Post 8.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Cindy Hand, Linda Thornhill and Kathy Nuss. Survivors include his wife, Deb of Denison; two sons: Bill and his wife, Jessie, their daughter, Brynn and son, Quinn, of Indianola; Nick and his wife, Ashley of West Des Moines; two sisters: Carol Mahurin of Purcell, Missouri; Sheri Kowalke and her husband, Vern of Nemaha, Iowa; one brother, Dan and his wife, DeeDee of Algona; nieces, nephews and many friends.
