Derek David Johannsen was born on December 16, 1985, to Craig Johannsen and Susan (Johannsen) Boland in Denison, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed his faith at the United Church of Christ Church in Schleswig. Derek attended Schleswig schools and graduated from Denison High School with the Class of 2004.
Derek was a skilled welder, honing his craft through experience in his previous job. His passion for farming allowed him to blend his talents, using his welding expertise to repair equipment and make his work more efficient. He was fortunate to farm alongside his family near Schleswig. Derek made his home west of Schleswig, where he shared his life with his girlfriend, Sara, and his three children: Huntur, Reid, and Lyndi.
Derek was a member of the United Church of Christ and their property committee as well as the Ricketts Fire Department and the Izaak Walton League. He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. One of his greatest joys was sharing his passion for nature and farming with his children and friends, teaching them the skills and traditions of hunting, fishing, and outdoor life. He especially enjoyed fishing trips to South Dakota, the thrill of snowmobiling and spending time on the golf course. Derek was a hardworking man who often stayed outside until after 8 PM, always committed to his work. He especially looked forward to his nightly phone calls with his buddies.
Derek passed away at the family farm on Saturday morning of March 1, 2025, at the age of 39 years, two months and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Murlin and Betty Johannsen and Frank and DeLoris Stewart; stepdad, Brian Boland; uncle, Frank Stewart Jr; cousins: Alicia Stewart and James Stewart.
Derek is survived by his significant other, Sara Swafford; children: Huntur Johannsen, Reid Johannsen and Lyndi Johannsen; mom, Susan Boland; dad, Craig (Julian) Johannsen; brother, Jerrod Johannsen (Talsha); stepsiblings: Brian Boland, Jr. (Misty), Jessica (Jon) Reiter and Jake Boland; nephews and niece: Colton, Brayton and Taryn Johannsen; aunts and uncles: Diane (Harry) Sigg, Kristine Stewart and Leisha Kragel; and many other relatives and friends.
