Donald Louis Koch was born July 13, 1926, the son of Paul and Marie Koch. He passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa, at the age of ninety.
Don was born in Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized into Christ on August 8, 1926 and confirmed April 6, 1941. After completing his education, he farmed with his brothers before entering the United States Army on May 23, 1945. He served in Italy with the 38th Depot Supply Squadron during WWII. He was decorated with a Lapel Button with an Overseas Service Bar. Don was honorably discharged on December 29, 1946, and returned to Crawford County to continue his farming career. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and VFW Color Guard. He was united in marriage to Donna Weinbrandt on December 12, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. The couple made their home on farms in both Schleswig and Ricketts areas and was blessed with the birth of four children.
Don was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved giving tractor rides to his grandchildren. He had a strong faith as evidenced by his stewardship in serving as an usher and elder at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township and serving as Sunday School Superintendent at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, was a member of the Lutheran Laymen League and on the Cemetery Board at Grant Township. He enjoyed traveling to Colorado, Arizona and Branson, Missouri, fishing in Canada, and socializing over a game of cards. In his younger years he enjoyed dancing and bowling in Ricketts and Schleswig.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Robert, Harvey, Marvin, Albrecht, Roland, Rudie and Lester; and eight sisters, Viola, Malinda, Hedwig, Selma, Helen, Dorretta, Marjorie, and Luella and a granddaughter, Faith. Survivors include: his wife, Donna; three daughters; Delora and her husband, Mark; Diane and her husband, Dean; and Darla; one son Donnie and special friend, Joni; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Beverly; and brother-in-law, James; many other relatives and friends.
