Donald W. Garrett

Donald William Garrett was born December 16, 1928, the son of Frederick and Anna Kuehl Garrett. He died at the Dunlap Specialty Care in Dunlap, Iowa, Monday, October 24, 2016, at the age of eighty-seven.
Don was born on a farm in Paradise Township near Arion, Iowa. He grew up there and received his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education, he began his long career in farming and remained on the farm until moving to Dow City in 1984. He was baptized in a rural church near his home and joined the United Methodist Church in 1967. He was united in marriage to Patricia McCoid, June 11, 1950. The couple was blessed with the birth of four children.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who diligently cared for his family. He was a devoted servant of the land and enjoying planting crops, combining and raising hogs. His wife, Pat, was the love of his life. His preference was her cooking, with bacon and eggs being his favored meal. Other activities that occupied his time were traveling and wintering in Texas, playing cards, visiting with his children, grandchildren, other relatives and his friends. Some of the places he and Pat enjoyed the most were trips to Puerto Rico, Alaska, Washington DC and Jamaica. While on the farm he served as Paradise Township Clerk from 1978 to 1984 that followed his fathers fifty year service. After moving to Dow City, he served on the Dow City Zoning Board. He was active in the United Methodist Church, serving on several church boards and committees.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia in April of this year and one sister Marcella Keiner and her husband, Don; son-in-law, Walt Wright in February of this year. Survivors include: two sons, Gene Garrett and his wife, Cathy, of Arion; Kevin Garrett and his wife, Deb of Dow City; two daughters: Kathy Wright and Connie Garrett, both of Council Bluffs; six grandchildren: Kelly and Amber Garrett, Molly and Cory Reisz, Jody and Justin Gatewood, Anna Wright, Scott Garrett, Patrick Garrett,; ten great-grandchildren: Connor Garrett, Colin Garrett, Cael Garrett, Emma Reisz, Owen Reisz, Eryn Reisz, Parker Gatewood, Paige Gatewood, Rikki Leigh Wright and Becca Wright; one great-great-grandson, Noah West; other relatives and friends.
