Doris Lucille Kuhlmann, the daughter of John and Fae Nelson-Nee Lawrenson, was born December 31, 1921 near Soldier, Iowa. She was embraced by the Lord on December 7, 2014 at the age of 92.
Doris was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa. She graduated from Soldier High School in 1939 and attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught rural school in Monona County, Iowa for 2 years. She later attended Phillips Business School in Sioux City and was employed by Wincharger Corporation. She was employed for 19 years with the US Department of Agriculture at the Sioux City Stockyards- she was the first woman broadcaster of livestock market reports - a job still held primarily by men.
Doris married Paul Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, Iowa on January 5, 1963, joining the Kuhlmann family and three wonderful children Linda, Brian and Morris. In 1966, Paul and Doris welcomed a baby girl, Venessa Fae.
Doris was active in Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa serving as a Sunday School teacher, Circuit Lutheran Daughters President, and Circle Leader. After becoming a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, she was active in Parent Teachers League, Lutheran Laymen’s League, Ladies Aid and LWML.
She also was a member of the Stockettes of Sioux City, Iowa, Beta Sigma Phi, Friday Club and was a past County Cancer Board Member. Doris was active in planning Charter Oak’s Diamond Jubilee and One Hundredth Anniversary. She was a 4-H Leader and served on various community committees.
She loved to entertain and organize social events; including an annual family Christmas Day program which is an endearing holiday memory for anyone who experienced it.
Doris and her husband Paul retired from their farm and moved to Denison, Iowa in 1993. In 2008 she moved to Des Moines to be near family and was a cherished resident of Fountain West Care Center in West Des Moines.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Paul. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Venessa and husband Jesse; three stepchildren, Linda and her husband George; Brian and wife Jan; and Dr. Morris and wife Mary. Eleven grandchildren; Mark, Peter and Dana , Jennifer , Amelia, Kimberly, Christopher and Brad, Jill, Elizabeth and Sophia ; great-grand children, Ciara and Civana; Aiden, Isabella Rose; Ryan, Tate and Evan; Eli and Grace Solveson; Stella Schladetzky.
Memorials may be offered to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
