Dorothy Louise Becker was born March 31, 1931, the daughter of John and Theodora Janning. She died at Immanuel Medical Center, Sunday, March 13, 2011, at the age of seventy-nine.
Dorothy was born in Carroll, Iowa, and received her education in Mount Carmel, Iowa. Later she attended the Ft. Dodge Beauty Academy where she graduated and began a career as a beautician. On November 11, 1952, she was united in marriage to Arthur Becker in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. The couple were blessed with the birth of two sons.
Dorothy first worked at Irenes Beauty Shop in Carroll but subsequently opened her own shop in Breda, Iowa remaining there for 6 years. She later moved to Dunlap where she maintained a beauty shop at the family farm. In the mid 60s, she opened a salon in Dunlap called Dorothys Beauty Shop and served the Dunlap community for more than 20 years as a beautician.
In the early 80s, she and Arthur opened the Far Out Caf in Dunlap which they operated for 10 years. From this business, they established a lunch wagon service which they operated until 2000. Dorothy enjoyed spending time in her gardens caring for both flowers and vegetables. Oftentimes she could be seen reading about herbal remedies, but socializing was of great interest to her. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, baking and canning for family and friends. While in the restaurant, their motto was: "We bake our buns and peel our own spuds." Baking pies was a given talent. Selling pies to Omahans as they passed through Dunlap on their way to the Iowa Lakes for the weekend was a proud accomplishment for her in the restaurant. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother caring for her family with compassion. She and Arthur raised her two sons together and served as foster parents for 43 other children on the farm.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Jerome and Lorence; and one sister, Louise. Survivors include her husband, Arthur; two sons: Daniel and Dennis; six grandchildren: Sara, Marniel, Dariel, Jai, Jackie, Christina and her husband, Terry; five great-grandchildren: Seth, Taylor, Anthony, Shane, and Tyler; five brothers: John and his wife, Mary Ann; Bernard and his wife, Arleen; Kenneth and his wife, June; Lowelland his wife, Julie; and Earnest and his wife, Diane; one sister, Lois and her husband, Dan; one sister-in-law, Mary Lou; and many foster children, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial Massof Chrisitan burial was held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 17, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City, Iowa. Fr. Andrew Bao Vo served as Celebrant of the Mass. Organist EveVonne Muff provided the message in music.The family invited everyone to the Community Building for fellowship and lunch served by the St. Mary and St. Boniface Ladies' Guilds. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
