Dorothy M. Rice passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, where she had been a resident for the last sixteen months in the “Memory Lane” unit.
Dorothy was born June 1, 1932, to Albert J. Alberts and his wife, Minnie of Holstein, Iowa. She graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1950. In that same year, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Rice on August 13 in Storm Lake, Iowa. They were blessed with 67 years together.
Their family continued to grow with the additions of Linda, Debbie and Douglas to whom she dedicated her life. Not only did she raise her three children, but she also took on the task of raising their granddaughter, April. When April died in a single car accident in 1994, Dorothy selflessly took on the challenge of raising her great-granddaughter, Samantha, age 1 years.
While Dorothy was busy raising three generations of children, she also held jobs outside of the home. From 1963 to 1974, she worked part-time as an Avon representative. When Bob and Dorothy opened Rice Trailer Company in Denison, Iowa, in 1975, she began working full time as their bookkeeper/receptionist. She continued in this capacity for the next thirty-one years until an accident forced her retirement at the age of seventy-three.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, April. She will be deeply missed by her husband, Bob; a sister, Norma; two daughters, Linda (James), and Debbie (Larry); one son, Douglas; three grandchildren; great-granddaughter, Samantha (Orlando); five additional great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
We give a special “Thank You” to the compassionate staff on “Memory Lane” for their dedicated service to the aged. They are truly some of God’s finest “Angels on Earth”.
