Duane "Dewey" C. Neppl

July 16, 1939 — March 14, 2014

Duane “Dewey” C. Neppl was born in Carroll, Iowa, on July 16, 1939, the son of Christopher William Neppl and Mary Matilda Rutten. He was raised on the family farm south of Denison. He attended country school in the Coon Grove area and also attended Vail High School. On November 26, 1960, Duane was united in marriage with Janice T. Eischeid at Holy Angel’s Catholic Church in Roselle, IA. Their union was blessed with five children: Patricia, Carlene, Christopher, Bryan, and Albert.
Duane and Janice first made their home north of Vail, then Manilla, and finally in the Denison area. Duane was involved in farming through 1980. He worked in sales with Pender Silo company, and then with the Des Moines Register. He began his farm machinery sales career with Schenkelberg Implement; he also worked for Vetter’s Equipment, New Holland in Carroll, and the Harvestore Silo Company. He began working for the U.S. Post Office as a rural mail carrier in 1976. He retired from the Post Office in 2004.
Duane, or Dewey, as he was known by many, was also involved in collecting and selling farm toys, making many acquaintances along the way. Dewey also enjoyed reading on just about any topic, but particularly his newspapers and about tractors, toys, trains, and our national parks. He had a tremendous love for John Wayne movies. No one was a stranger to Dewey as he would quickly strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He and Janice attended many events of their children and grandchildren. He will lovingly be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Iowa and National Rural Letter Carriers Associations, and the Crawford County Fair Board.
Duane died unexpectedly on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 74 years.
