He devoted his life to teaching his children an appreciation for the land, animals and the gifts they were given. For many years he enjoyed watching his children show livestock at various fairs, and shearing the lambs before show day. He had a loving heart and loved to socialize with everyone. Duane was a very active member of the community who enjoyed grilling for the Sheep Show at the Crawford County Fair and attending the FFA trips to Canada. His appreciation for the outdoors went beyond just farming. He loved his hunting and fishing trips to Waubay, North Dakota and Red River, North Dakota, watching his sheep, and just relaxing outdoors.
