Edmund Petersen

Edmund Carl Petersen was born January 3, 1924, the son of August and Mahala Johannsen Petersen. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, on Friday, May 4, 2012 at the age of eighty-eight.
Edmund was born on a farm in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa, near Denison. He was baptized April 22, 1924, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and was confirmed there in the Lutheran faith April 10, 1938. After completing his education at Hanover #6, he began his farming career and in that time, worked for various farmers in the area. Edmund was united in marriage to Marion Boyens on April 6, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple continued to farm in Crawford County and were blessed with the birth of four children. Edmund continued to work on road maintenance until 1948 when he began farming near Ricketts and Charter Oak. In 1972, they purchased his recent farm northwest of Denison where they remained until moving to Denison in 2009.
He was a member of several boards including the Farm Bureau, ASC Board, REC Board and an Elder at Zion Lutheran Church. He was a dignified man and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend who cared for those he loved with devotion. He had a strong faith in his Lord and Savior and saw to his familys spiritual needs with care. In his leisure time he enjoyed socializing with his family and friends over a game of cards, gardening, and feeding the cats. In younger years he and Marion enjoyed dancing. He played baseball and pitched horse shoes, and was a faithful attendee at his childrens high school sporting events. More recently, he enjoyed watching all sporting events on TV and reading, especially western novels from authors Zane Grey and Louie LAmour. He was a good story teller and enjoyed reminiscing of his youthful years.
Edmund was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marie and Margaret; two brothers, John and Leonard; brothers-in-law, Donald, Wilbur, and Marvine; and sister-in-law, Loueen. Survivors include his wife, Marion; two daughters, Lanette and her husband, Robert; Lajean and her husband, Lee; two sons, Larry and his wife, Marianne; and Lowell and his wife,Terri; ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anna, Betty, and Berniece and her husband, Carl; one brother, Earl and his wife, Barbara; one sister-in-law, Arlis; one brother-in-law, Ralph; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
