Edrie Joyce Wellendorf was born on September 28, 1937 to Edward and Mary (Kock) Leeds in Carroll, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed her faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. Edrie attended grade school at Boyer Country School and graduated from Odebolt High School with the class of 1955. Edrie married the love of her life, Glen Wellendorf on October 18, 1959 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. The couple made their home in Denison and three children were born to this union.
She started her working career at the family grocery store in Boyer before becoming a bookkeeper. After the birth of her children, she became a stay-at-home mom until her children grew older. She also worked for Denison Vending, L&L Motel, and Hy-Vee until her retirement in 2000.
She was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was the queen of the kitchen. She spent many hours volunteering and held various positions over the years as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Zion Evening Guild. In 2022, Edrie became a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Denison.
Edrie enjoyed reading, planting flowers around the house, and yard work. She also enjoyed competing and going to the Iowa games, bowling, and having coffee with the ladies. She loved to cook and bake and was well known for her carrot cake. She was an avid Monarch fan and enjoyed going to her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter's sporting events. She had a strong faith in her Lord and cherished her family more than anything.
Edrie passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at the Reed Place in Denison, under the care of St. Croix Hospice at the age of 85 years, 2 months, and 10 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen Wellendorf on January 9, 2022; parents-in-law, Elmer and Ruby Wellendorf; two brothers-in-law, Jay Foster and Don Wellendorf; sister-in-law, Judy Wellendorf; and infant nephew.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Brian Wellendorf and wife, Christy of Urbandale, Glenda and husband, Scott Bielenberg of Deloit, and Kitty Caporale and fiancé, Mark Slechta of Harlan; seven grandchildren: Derek Bielenberg (Emma Lodestein) of Maxwell, Lesley Bielenberg (Dominick Ludwig) of Maxwell, Tyler Wellendorf (Gabi Gaines) of Waukee, Morgan (Noe) Cabrera of Waukee, Landon Slechta and his fiancé, Morgan Feenstra of Sioux Center, Devyn (Max) Lawrence of Dunlap and Bailey Wellendorf of Adel; three great-granddaughters: Brooklyn and Aubree "AJ" Lawrence and Camila Cabrera, and another great-grandchild on the way in May of 2023; sister, Phyllis Foster of Fremont, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Virginia (Ray) Slechta of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Clarice Wellendorf of Davenport, and Marjorie Wellendorf of Omaha; brother-in-law: Robert Wellendorf of Elk Horn, Nebraska; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
The visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment will be held in the Deloit Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Christ Lutheran Church in Denison.
