Elaine Marie Carey Slechta was born July 25, 1948, the daughter of William and Anna Phillips Carey. She passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013, surrounded by her family at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 65.
Elaine was born in Denison, Iowa. She received her education in the Dow City-Arion Community Schools and later earned her GED from WIT in Denison. Elaine was united in marriage to Chuck Slechta and to this union was born four daughters. Elaine worked as a cook for Denison Care Center and the EatMor Caf. In 1989 she began volunteering at HeadStart and earned her CDA, which turned into full-time employment where Elaine was still working at the present and had plans to retire January 1, 2014.
In her spare time Elaine enjoyed reading romance novels and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She had fun going out for dinner with her sister Arlene and cruising around in her PT Cruiser. Elaine went to great lengths to decorate her house for Halloween. Elaine was confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Rose of Lima in Denison in April 2011 and enjoyed going to Mass. She had a fun-loving spirit and was always joking around, never acknowledging she was over 27 years old. Elaine was always singing and famous for making up her own lyrics. She lived life to the fullest right up to the end.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chuck in 1989; two sisters, Donna Wood and Carol Blunk; and one brother, Dick Carey. Survivors include four daughters: Jeana Huebert and her husband, Dennis of Denison; Lee-Ann Slechta and her friend Ishmael of Denison; Suzanne Davis and her husband, Chris of Des Moines, Iowa; and Amy Magruder and husband Mike of Fort Dodge, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Brandon, Tabitha, Austin, Faith, Shelby, Katie, Jackson, Haley, Noah, Sophia, and Keira; one great-granddaughter, Norah; three step great-grandchildren, Nautica, Natalie, and Natasha; one brother, Ron Carey of Nevada; two sisters: Jeanie Carey of Omaha, Nebraska; and Arlene Hast of Dow City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Jean Jackson Carey and Esther Slechta; both of Denison; and one brother-in-law, Larry Slechta of Denison; other relatives and friends.
