Eleanor Marie Olderog was born May 1, 1914, the daughter of William and Jane Withrow Riley. She died Friday, December 11, 2009 at her home in Denison, Iowa having attained the age of 95.
Eleanor was born on a farm near Lawrence, Illinois, close to the Indiana border. When she was 6 years old, she moved to Iowa with her family and settled on a farm near Deloit. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township, Crawford County, Iowa, February 20, 1938. She attended a rural school through the 8th grade and continued her education in the Deloit High School.
October 11, 1934, Eleanor was united in marriage to Godfrey W. Preuss in the Lutheran parsonage in Avoca, Iowa.. The couple lived with her parents for a while before settling on a farm near Deloit. in 1942. They were blessed with the birth of two children. In 1949, the family moved to a farm north of Vail where they remained until 1964, when Godfrey died. Eleanor moved to Denison later that year and began working at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital as a nurse aid. She continued her employment there until retiring in 1984 after 21 years of service to the hospital..
May 12, 1973, Eleanor was united in marriage to Henry Olderog. The couple remained in Eleanors home in Denison. During their union, they traveled to Europe twice and were privileged to meet relatives of Godfreys.
Eleanor was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She found her church and family among the most important events in her life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Zions Ladies Aid, Evening Guild, Fellowship and Christian Craft Time.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Godfrey Preuss and Henry Olderog; four sisters: Clara Riley, Mayme Winey, Nellie Mae Franzek and Esther Andresen. Survivors include: two daughters, Corrine Preuss and Mary Hargens both of Denison; two grandchildren, Gina Schmidt and her husband, Fred of Milford, Iowa; and Robert Hargens and his special friend Alesia of Arnolds Park, Iowa; and one great-grandson, Adam Schmidt of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
