Elizabeth Pauline (Griffin) Hawley, more affectionately known as “Pat” was born on August 24, 1937, the daughter of Killman “K.E.” and Dollie (Baker) Griffin in Charleston, Missouri. As a child, she was baptized into Evangelical Christian faith. She graduated from Lake View High School in Lake View, Iowa with the class of 1955. She then spent time working as a telephone operator.
Pat married Raymond “Frank” Hawley on January 26, 1958, in Lake View and four children were born to this union: Janelle, Alisa, Greg, and Erica. The family made their home on a farm near Denison. Their house was built by her father and brother, who owned Griffin Construction. Pat worked hard inside the home raising her children, helping them with their schoolwork, attending their field trips and cooking hot meals for her family. She kept fruit trees and a large garden and would preserve the produce for the winter months. Pat taught Sunday school and was involved with the ladies’ church group at the Presbyterian church in Vail.
Pat was a member of the Grace Evangelical Free Church in Denison. She could often be found volunteering at the Denison Library. After retirement, Pat and Frank enjoyed traveling, some of their favorite destinations were Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Scotland. Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska. She enjoyed passing the time by completing the New York Times crossword puzzles, cross stitching and painting with oils on various types of materials such as metal and glass.
