Elvera Ethel (Kroll) Meseck was born May 31, 1928, in Ute, Iowa, the third daughter of Frank and Clara Kroll. She entered her eternal rest on October 27, 2018, holding the hand of her husband surrounded by her family.
Elvera was baptized June 17, 1928, and later confirmed April 6, 1941, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. She attended the Ute School system and graduated high school with the class of 1945. In July of that year, she married her sweetheart, Theodore Edgar (Slugger) Meseck. They were blessed with the births of five children. Her heart never healed from the sudden death of her firstborn son, Francis, in November of 1967.
She was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, where she and Edgar served as caretakers. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was active in the Women’s Group. They moved to Schleswig in 1964 and became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. After she retired, she enjoyed assisting with the quilting group at the church. They moved from Elm Street to the Hollander home where she had a kitchen sink with a window and a garage for her vehicle.
Elvera enjoyed playing the organ and the accordion, both of which she played by ear. Many times you would open the front house door and hear her playing a hymn or a polka. She loved to dance. She collected dishes of various designs, colors and uses. Playing solitaire filled up some of her time. Her love for quilting came quite naturally to her and each child, grandchild and great-grandchild received a quilt that was made just for them. Her embroidery work was flawless on the tea towels and pillow cases she created.
Elvera was retired from her job at the Schleswig Community Schools after 29 years serving the latter years as head cook where she knew each child by his or her first name. Her love for her family was apparent in all she did from the special birthday cards to her homemade cakes, candy and breads. She always had some sweet treat sitting on the counter ready to be enjoyed. She was a longtime (50+ years) member of the VFW Auxiliary and was always proud to say two of her sons had served.
Elvera became an Eventide Memory Lane resident in January 2014 and was thankful for each caring person that became family to her, especially Mary, Kandra, Annette, Darcy, Robin and Billie. Her family will forever be grateful for their kind, gentle, caring attention. Early mornings they would know she was awake in her room as they could hear her singing one of her many favorite songs.
Elvera was preceded in death by her son, Francis; her parents, Frank and Clara; her sisters, Rosie and Selma and their husbands; brothers-in-law, Delaine, Merrill and Henry and their spouses; and Leroy; sisters-in-law, Lila, Lucille, Margaret and Ellen and their husbands. Those left to cherish her memory are: her husband, Edgar; sons: Gary and Arlen (Suzi); daughters: Linda (Gary) and Nancy (Terry); grandchildren: Patricia (Brian), Lisa (Mike), Jerrod, Stacy (Scott), Trevor, Troy, Alexia, Brandon (Kerry) and Trevor; great-grandchildren: Denim (Erica), Jezlynn, Trey (Taytum), Tayten, Hunter, Tanner, Conner, Keegan, Reed, Isla and Brentley; one great-great-grandson Hoyt; sister-in-law, Lori; nephews; nieces; and many special friends. Each holding a special place in her heart.
