Emma Louise Christine Garrett was born July 21, 1910, the daughter of Jurgen and Minnie Hansen Petersen. She passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-nine.
Emma was born on a farm near Arion. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith as an infant. She attended Paradise #2 School and also one year at Zion Lutheran School in Denison while taking confirmation instruction, being confirmed on April 5, 1925. In her earlier years she helped her parents on the farm.
On January 30, 1936, she was united in marriage to Everett Garrett of Wall, South Dakota. The couple was blessed with one son, Darryl. They spent their lives in Iowa and South Dakota. In October 1955 they purchased a farm north of Dow City and lived there until 1983, at which time they moved to an apartment in Dow City, Iowa. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1976. In 1995 Emma moved to Eventide Housing in Denison and then to Eventide Lutheran Home in November 1999.
Her hobbies were cooking, baking, playing cards, and fishing. She was a perfectionist but was best at homemaking. She enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors and relatives while she gathered and wrote local news for the Denison Newspapers, Dow City Herald and Manilla Times for many years. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City and Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett in 1988; one sister, Ella Garrett; three brothers, Hans, Rudolph and Otto Petersen; stepfather, Henry Maack. Survivors include her son, Darryl Garrett and his wife, Barbara of Manassas, Virginia; three granddaughters; two grandsons; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Lorena Petersen; a very special person, C-Ann; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives and friends.
