Emogene O. Hansman

October 16, 1921 — January 17, 2014

Emogene Olga Hansman was born October 16, 1921, the daughter of Dick and Matilda Dreessen Auen. She died at her home, Friday, January 17, 2014 at the age of ninety-two, surrounded by almost all of her favorite women.
Emogene was born on a farm near Herring, Iowa where she grew up and received her education in rural schools near her home through the 8th grade and completed her GED through Western Iowa Tech in the 70's. July 29, 1941, she was united in marriage to her one and only love, Harold Hansman. From that time on, the couple were known as “Bud & Emmy.” Their early married life found them in Yakima Washington. Emmy worked for Libby McNeal and Libby, canning pears. After returning to Iowa from Washington, the couple lived on a farm near Ute, Iowa before settling on a farm outside of Vail where they raised hogs, cattle, chickens in addition to farming the land.
She was a fun lady who loved to dance. She always requested the song, Spanish Eyes at dances and requested it so often, the band came to playing it when she walked in the door. She had eclectic interests that included socializing over a game of cards, especially Euchre, Canasta, 500 and Poker. She loved reading and read many books. She collected Teddy Bears and often gave them as gifts to her family and friends. Crocheting, cross stitching, embroidery and quilting occupied much of her leisure time. She was a member of the Crazy Quilters, the Red Hats and the ladies circle at the United Presbyterian Church in Vail. She enjoyed watching wild life through her window at her home and played practical jokes on her family and friends especially on April fools day. Emogene was a die hard Cubs fan and was always engaged in baseball pools. Of all the activities in her life, the most important was that she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cared for her family with grace and passion.
Emogene was preceded in death by her parents; son Ricky in 1972 and her husband, Harold also in 1972; one grandson Benjamin; two sisters, Margaret and her husband, Clarence and Edna and her husband, Clayton; one brother, Jack; and two sisters-in-law, Colletta and Eileen.
