Erma Margaret Marie Fretz was born November 7, 1920, the daughter of Ferdinand and Martha Boger. She died at the Denison Care Center, Sunday, February 21, 2016, at the age of ninety-five.
Erma was born on a farm near Denison, growing up and receiving her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, she helped her family and helped as needed with neighbors in the area.
December 24, 1938, Erma was united in marriage to Leonard Fretz at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, by the Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple settled in Charter Oak and was blessed with the birth of five children. Leonard was involved in bridge construction and plumbing and Erma took care of the home making and caring for her children. She enjoyed the company of children and cooked at St. John’s Lutheran School in Charter Oak for many years as well as baby sitting for several families in the area.
Much of Erma’s leisure time was spent crocheting, knitting and canning vegetables. She and Leonard enjoyed the tranquility fishing in local ponds, dancing, and treasured the time she spent with her family during special events that included anniversaries and birthdays. Friends were important to her and she enjoyed socializing with them at the Charter Oak Senior Center. Erma was a sincere Christian with a soft heart and good sense of humor, that made her a joy to be around.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; one daughter, in infancy; five brothers: Raymond, Leslie, Harry, Clarence and Louis; three sisters: Loretta, Gloria and Gladys; one son-in-law, Dick. Survivors include: one son, Floyd and his wife, Harriet; three daughters: Phyllis and her husband, Gailen; Sharon; Patty and her husband, Tim; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jenell; many other relatives and friends.
