Ervin Peter Paul Kuhlmann was born January 31, 1917, at Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Fred and Dora Kuhlmann. He passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of one hundred.
Ervin was baptized April 8, 1917, and confirmed March 29, 1931, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Pastor Amstein. After receiving his education in the rural schools near his home and St. John’s Lutheran School, he helped his father with farming.
He was inducted into the United States Army during World War II, serving from January, 1942 to June, 1945. His tour of duty took him to Australia, New Guinea and Leyte of the Philippine Islands. Upon his return to the United States, he was stationed at Trinidad Colorado Army Camp where German war prisoners were held. After his discharge from the Army, he began farming the family farm raising hogs, Hereford cattle and chickens.
On March 2, 1947, Ervin was united in marriage to Marie Sophie Greene at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. They were blessed with the birth of one son, Donald.
After living on the farm for thirty-five years, he and Marie moved into Charter Oak. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening and playing Yahtzee, which he was very good at.
Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; his parents; one brother, George; and one sister, Leona. Survivors include his son, Don and his wife, Leila; five grandchildren: Christine and her husband, Corey; Amy and her husband, Dennis; Andrew; Loni Sue; Jonathan and his wife, Bethany; nine great-grandchildren: Corbin, Courtney, Dylan, Cameron, Ethan, Caden, Mason, Bailey, Kurtis; four exchange grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
