Eugene R. Sleister

January 16, 1945 — March 10, 2014

Eugene Raymond Sleister was born January 16, 1945, the son of Raymond and Ola Sleister. He passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of sixty-nine.
Eugene was born in Manilla, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member. He received his education in Greely Township Country School #1 in Shelby County until sixth grade, then went to the Manilla Community School, graduating with the class of 1963. After completing his education he was employed at Western Iowa Pork Meat Packing Company in Harlan, Iowa until 1966 at which time he became employed with the USDA as a meat inspector in the Denison, Iowa area, where he remained employed until his retirement in 2008.
Eugene was active in 4-H and FFA in high school. He enjoyed FFA trips with his classmates and teachers C Dean Johnson, Tokeim and Ferguson. Eugene also took his parents on several trips across the United States. No niece or nephew will forget the trip with “Uncle Gene” to South Dakota. Ask them about the cave tour. Many of Eugene’s favorite trips were with high school friends during which many a laugh was laughed and about which many a tale was told. Too bad there is no Kodak evidence.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Lynn in infancy. Survivors include his sisters, Ruth and Bonnie and her husband, Tom; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family invites everyone to the Irwin Community Building for fellowship and lunch from 12:30 P.M. until the service time on Friday.
