Ferne W. Hast

Ferne Wilma Hast was born May 30, 1918, in Vincennes, Indiana, the daughter of Ora and Fannie Ridgley. She passed away at Dunlap Nursing and Rehab in Dunlap, Iowa on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at the age of 96.
Ferne received her elementary education in a rural school near her home and graduated from the Vail Community High School. She continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa. Upon completing her education she was a rural school teacher in Buck Grove until she was united in marriage to Virgil Hast on August 16, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. The couple was blessed with the birth of five children.
Ferne was a rural school teacher and a homemaker before working as a CNA at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa from 1967 to 1982. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, Ladies Aid, the Red Hats, and daily exercise classes in Dow City. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, and canning. Ferne also enjoyed socializing with friends and family, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune and IPTV, especially The Antiques Roadshow. Over the years she also made many crafts, and knitted afghans and various other items for her family. Ferne also loved attending sporting events and school programs that her grandchildren took part in.
Ferne is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil; one daughter, Joan Keairnes in 1982; one daughter-in-law, Marcia Hast; brothers, Ray, Joe; three sisters, Edith, Esther, and Ruth; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vernon, August, Gayle, Shirley, Phyllis “Molly”, and Norman
Survivors include: three sons, David; Dean and his wife Lisa; Lynn and his wife Sheri; one daughter Karen and her husband Tom, twenty-two grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha; Shirley and Kenneth; Arnold and Doris; Betty and Keith; Delores; and Darlene.
