Florence Carey was born June 22, 1913, the daughter of William and Erna Gehlsen Graves. She died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in Long Beach, California, at the age of ninety-six.
Florence was born in Schleswig, Iowa, attended Denison schools and graduated from Denison High School. For many years she worked at the Green Bay Lumber Company in Denison. On April 17, 1953, she was united in marriage to Ray Carey at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Together they made their home in the Denison community. After Rays death on June 19, 1965, she continued to reside in Denison until 1990 at which time she moved to Azusa, California, to live with her sister, Bernadine. Upon her sisters death, Florence lived in Long Beach, California, with her niece and husband, Carol and Randy Miller, and their children, Allie, Dashiell, Cheyenne and Taylor.
She was a very kind and loving lady who loved to get together and play cards with her sisters-in-law and friends in Denison, as well as her family in Iowa and California.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her siblings: Maryetta, Peter, Loyal, Robert (Bob) and Bernadine. Survivors include nieces and nephews: Rick Gibson of Azusa, California; Carol Miller of Long Beach, California; Helen Malloy of Westside; John Carey of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan; Ramona Davis of Coon Rapids; Luetta Mason of Westside and Carole Graves of Iowa City; other relatives and friends.
A Prayer Service was held on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at All Souls Catholic Mortuary in Long Beach, California. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Fr. Tim Friedrichsen officiating. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements in Denison.
