Frederick R. Backhaus

Frederick Richard Backhaus was born August 14, 1934 to the late Richard and Bertha (Braase) Backhaus in Denison, Iowa. He graduated from Country School in the 8th grade and worked hard to become a self-made man.

On June 29, 1952, Fred was united in marriage to Patricia Munson. To this union, three children were born: Ron, Lynn and Andrea. They made their home in Schleswig where he farmed for many years before moving to Denison in 1988. Fred owned and operated Backhaus Equipment in Schleswig from 1977-1995.

He was an avid card player who also enjoyed watching western shows and taking care of his dogs, Gracie and Angel. Although he enjoyed many things in life, his real love was buying farm equipment and his interactions with the public.

If you have ever seen a New Idea 2 row pull-type corn picker, there's a chance Fred bought it or sold it at one time. Fred will always be remembered for his great memory. He could recall birthdays and all kinds of things regarding his family and friends along with the specific dates and years that it had happened. It will always remain a mystery how he knew what was what and what was when.

If you were lucky, you have had a drink or two with Fred in his basement or his younger days at Fats. One thing was for sure, Fred also will be remembered for enjoying having the newer finer things in life. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great-grandpa who will be missed by many.

Fred passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison attaining the age of eighty-six years and eight months. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Backhaus Braeker.

Left to cherish his memory, Patricia Backhaus; son, Ron Backhaus and his wife Kathie of Smithville, Missouri; daughter, Andrea and her husband J.R. Pauley of Denison; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; other relatives and friends.

Private family services will be held Sunday, April 18, 2021 at the Huebner Funeral Home. Interment is in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to either the Denison City Pound or the Logan Humane Society.
