Galen Leo Ferry was born on September 8, 1939, the son of Wayne and Katherine Schleimer Ferry. He passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 73.
Galen was born in Kirkman, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Botna, Iowa, and received his education in the Irwin Community Schools graduating with the class of 1958. Galen served as band drum major all four years of high school. He worked for Purina in Irwin through his first three high school years and then in his senior year for J & S Feed Service where he met his future wife, Janice Jensen. Galen and Janice were united in marriage August 24, 1958. Galen was baptized and joined the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa. They then moved to Harlan where he was employed at the 66 Station. Galen also played in a country western band called The Rounders.
The couples next move was to Denison at the Apco Station. Galen then joined the National Guard for six years. After basic training, he returned to Manning again and Sheila (1964) and Todd (1966) completed their family. Sheila lives in Schleswig and is an insurance agent at the Hoffman Agency, and Todd is a police officer in Sioux City with his wife Chris and three children - Matt, Paxi, and Lexi.
Galen owned Schinco, Inc. for 39 years which was subsequently sold to the Hoffman Agency. Galen and Janice owned a home adjacent to the golf course in Schleswig as Galen was an avid golfer and served as president of the senior mens league and on the golf course board. He also served as President of the Schleswig Businessmans Club. Galen liked to fish at the cabin where he and Janice would spend time in the summer and enjoyed when his grandchildren could join him. He was a NASCAR fan and his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. Galen was the drummer for many years in the Schleswig German Band. Winter time found Galen and Janice enjoying the warm weather of Arizona. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig and served on the church council and sang in the choir.
Galen was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Janice of Schleswig; two children: Sheila of Schleswig; and Todd and his wife, Chris of Sioux City; one grandson, Matt; two step-grandchildren, Paxi and Lexi; one brother, Loren Ferry and his wife, Jeannette of Manilla; and one sister, Marla Crane and her husband, Larry of Maricopa, Arizona; other relatives and friends.
