Genevieve Lucille Wight was born March 9, 1915, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Hansen in Paradise Township. She died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the age of 101. Genevieve grew up on a farm in Paradise Township north of Dow City. She received her education in the Dow City School, graduating with the class of 1933. After completing her education, she was united in marriage to Winford Jay Wight, also of Dow City, on June 3, 1933. The couple rented farms in the Dow City and Denison area until purchasing their farm southeast of Arion. The couple was blessed with the birth of one son.
She was a hardworking homemaker helping her husband, Jay, on the farm and maintaining her home. Growing up in the depression era gave her the strength, both physically and emotionally, to endure the hardships that households in that period of time faced. She was an excellent cook and her family never hungered. She enjoyed caring for a vegetable garden and canned many quarts of tomatoes plus the other vegetables from it.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed visiting neighbors and family. In early years, the couple joined others in a square dancing club. She enjoyed her grandchildren and having them stay at the farm occasionally. After Jay died in 1980, Genevieve moved to Denison. She enjoyed grocery shopping often and took advantage of that time to visit with other shoppers. After her great grandchildren were born, she was known as Granny and she enjoyed seeing these children when they visited. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Denison after moving to Denison.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; Harold at the age of 16, Robert in 1974; and her husband, Jay, in 1980. Survivors include her son, Dale and his wife Sharon; two granddaughters: Nancy and her husband Jeff; Debra; one grandson, Mike and his wife Lori; five great-grandchildren: Jacob, Jared, Zachary, Madison and Carson; other relatives and friends.
