Gladys M. Wiegel was born January 19, 1924, at Dodge, Nebraska, the daughter of Carl and Louise Alberts. She passed away Friday, November 9, 2018, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-four.
Gladys was baptized in Christ and later confirmed her faith at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak July 30, 1939. She was united in marriage to Leonard Wiegel on October 14, 1941, at Rock Port, Missouri, and the couple settled on a farm near Dow City, Iowa, and was blessed with the birth of five children. Subsequently, they farmed near Schleswig until Leonard entered Eventide Lutheran Home in 1993. Gladys moved to Denison in 1996 and became a resident of Denison Care Center in 2013.
As a farm wife and lover of animals, Gladys helped her husband on the farm as well as hatching and raising geese and ducks and raising and releasing butterflies, in which she was very interested. She also found great pleasure in her flowers and gardening. Gladys kept up on politics, watched TV news, and read magazines and newspapers, especially Capper’s Weekly. She was also an exceptional baker and will be remembered for her cinnamon rolls, kolaches “Danish rolls”, pies and individual pies for fund raisers. Her family was very special to her and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leonard in 1994; one son, Larry; one grandson, Brian; three brothers and their wives: Melvin and Alice, Walter and Mary, and Dennis and Willa Mae; one sister and her husband, Renata and August. Survivors include: four daughters: Sharon and her husband, Bruce; Valdene; Pamela and her husband, Gordon; and Patricia and her husband, John; one daughter-in-law, Joyce; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one more anticipated; two sisters-in-law, Amelia and Frances; other relatives and friends.
