Gordon Glen Olson was born on December 10, 1945, at Ute, Iowa, the son of Oluf L. and Helen Wessel Olson. He passed away on September 16, 2013, at Alegent Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 67 years and 9 months.
Gordy was baptized into the Lutheran faith by Pastor Carl Schmidt on the 24th day of October 1946. He was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City on May 1, 1960.
The family lived in the Dow City area where Gordy attended Dow City Community School until 1958 when they moved to Denison. Gordy attended Denison Community School graduating on May 25, 1965. After graduation he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. He was discharged on February 2, 1972.
Gordy moved to Colorado where he worked on a dude ranch and also managed a King Super Store. He married Sue Willems on June 10, 1972. After his divorce he lived in Idaho, Kansas, and Texas. In 1995 he moved to Missouri where he worked for Premium Standard Farms. After he retired he moved to Deloit where he worked part-time for Thomson-Stracke Farms. After his brother had a heart attack in January 2013, Gordy took over his farming operation.
If you asked Gordy to go fishing, he would meet you at the pond or lake with the boat, the fishing poles, the bait and maybe a few beers. Gordy also loved to hunt. He hunted elk in Colorado, antelope in Wyoming, deer in Iowa, and turkey and deer in Missouri.
Although Gordy never had kids he didn’t miss an opportunity to spend time with his nieces and nephews. Gordy loved to garden and can. He also kept the family supplied with homemade wine. He spent many hours grilling for family and friends. He was a very active member of the Izaak Walton League West Central Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his infant brother Lyle Laverne; his Dad Ole, and his great-niece, Maggie Olson. Survivors include his Mom Helen; and three brothers: Bob and his wife Roseann of Deloit, IA; Wayne and his wife Jan of Spickard, MO; and Gene of Denison, IA. He is also survived by four sisters: Dona and her husband Rex Siemer of Spickard, MO; Diana and her husband, Lonnie Blunk of Princeton, MO; Debbie and her husband Creston Schubert of Galva, IA; and Cindy and her husband Ron Hoffmeier of Denison, IA. He is also survived by 12 nieces, 11 nephews and many other relatives and friends.
