Grace Keating

Grace Lucile Keating was born August 13, 1922, the daughter of William and Besse McClellan Steuart. She passed away Saturday, August 3, 2013, at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of ninety.
Grace was born in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, Canada and came to the United States with her parents on August 31, 1923. She became a United States citizen when her parents were naturalized on May 27, 1933. She attended the Denison Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1940. In second grade she missed 44 school days with scarlet fever and injury to her head when her cousin, Jimmy McClellan dropped a rake on her head. In high school Grace was active in Girls Athletic Association and was a cheerleader. After completing her education she was employed by Montgomery Ward for four years.
On May 31, 1944, Grace was united in marriage to Melvin Leo “Crip” Miller at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Boise, Idaho, for three months, when Crip was sent overseas during World War II. They moved to Denison in 1953. Crip passed away in 1986. She was a homemaker until 1962, when she went to work for Farmers Elevator from 1962 - 1965; operated City Market and C & G Grocery from 1966 -1967; Pamida from 1969 - 1972; Erichs Motor 1972 - 1979; and McClellan Electric 1979 - 1983. She retired in 1983 to care for Crip. Grace was married to Vincent Keating on December 8, 1990 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Grace was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and their Ladies Guild. She was also a member of Crawford County Historical Society, former member of O.E.S., and Crawford County Cancer Board. She was coordinator when Road to Recovery Program was started in 1988 and a volunteer driver. She joined Rainbow on October 28, 1935 and Eastern Star in 1983. In her leisure time she enjoyed traveling, counted cross stitching, socializing, playing cards with family and friends, and cheering on her grandchildren and the Chicago Cubs.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Crip; and her husband, Vincent in 2004; two sisters: Besse and Avis, and two brothers: Bill and James. She is survived by three sons: Robert Miller and his wife, Linda of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; James “Mike” Miller and his wife, Deborah of Ankeny, Iowa; Bill Miller and his wife, Dianne of Denison; two daughters: Susan Bruhn and her husband, David of Charter Oak; and Karen Christiansen and her husband, Gary of Denison; three step-sons: Dennis Keating and his wife, Kay of Littleton, Colorado; Richard Keating of Denison; and David Keating and his wife, Diann of Parker, Colorado; nineteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild; other relatives and friends.
