Harlan Burl Samuelson was born January 15, 1925, the son of John and Iona Jones Samuelson. He passed away on November 1, 2011, at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of eighty-six.
Harlan was born in Cornell, Iowa, and received his education in the Linn Grove Community Schools. He farmed with his father and then entered the Service in 1945, training at Camp Fannin, Texas, for deployment to Japan. He was united in marriage to Mary Jean Roland on July 3, 1944, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and to this union three children were born. Harlan continued farming for 12 more years and then moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, and Albert City, Iowa, where he became employed as a brick layer and stonemason. He bought and managed a grocery store in Marathon, Iowa, in the early 60's, also constructing a new grocery store there. In 1979 the couple moved to Montana and Harlan returned to the construction business. He returned to Iowa and owned and operated a Sears store in Denison for three years, then moved back to Montana and Washington state to again work in the construction business. After seven years out West, they retired in Denison.
Harlan lived an eventful life, and loved anything with a motor in it, especially if it went fast, which gave him great pleasure in following his grandsons racing career. He and Mary Jean enjoyed riding their motorcycles, especially on trips to Montana. He was a baseball and football fan, watching many games on television. Harlan cherished family time with his children and grandchildren.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Marvin and his wife, Betty. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean; one daughter, Jeri and her husband, Ronald; two sons, Jon and his wife, Cathy; and David and his wife, Trudy; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Arlo and his wife, Carol; other relatives, and friends.
