Emblem

Herman Charles Kohnekamp was born on September 3, 1946, the son of John E. and LuVerne A. (Ewoldt) Kohnekamp in Ute, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After completing the 11th grade, Herman followed the example of his older brother Bill by joining the United States Army, where he honorably served his country. He especially cherished his time stationed in Germany.

Herman married Sherry Wiese, and together they welcomed two sons into the world. The couple went their separate ways and divorced. Later he married Nancy (Ang) Aldag on October 1, 1988, in Denison, Iowa. With this union, he gained three beloved stepchildren, and the couple made their home in Kiron, blending their families into one.

A hardworking man, Herman dedicated over four decades to his career at Farmland Foods. Even in retirement, his work ethic and desire to contribute to his community led him to take on the role of Kiron City Maintenance. He was a dedicated member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, where he served as both President, Vice President and started morning coffee club. A proud veteran, he was also active in the American Legion Post 645, finding camaraderie with his fellow servicemen.

The outdoors was Herman’s sanctuary. He took great pride in his gardens, often tending to several at once and proudly sharing stories of his abundant harvests which he shared with his community, friends and family. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, with one of his most treasured memories being a hole-in-one at the Schleswig Golf Course. Above all else, Herman’s greatest joy was his family, and he cherished every moment spent as a father and grandfather.

Herman passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 78 years, four months and 18 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Jerry (Belinda) and William (Corlie) Kohnekamp; and sister, Julia (Maurice) Henkelman; grandson, Austin Hugeback; son-in-law, Michael Hugeback sister-in-law, Barb Kohnekamp.

Herman is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Nancy Kohnekamp of Kiron; brother, Vernon Kohnekamp of Dow City; sons: Jason (Christine) Kohnekamp of Omaha, Nebraska and Jeremy (Launie) Kohnekamp of Hildrizhausen, Germany; stepchildren: Tammy Hill of Kiron, Tracy Hugeback of Wall Lake and Ted (Donna) Aldag of Wall Lake; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other family members and friends.
